a little about me.I have lived in North Norfolk all my life. For much of that time, I was unaware of Norfolk's pre-Norman heritage. My father came from Northumbria, and compared to that county's Roman heritage, Norfolk seemed poor. Then, one day, I received a copy of a map that suggested there was a Roman marching camp near Smallburgh. It also showed a Roman road south of where I lived. When I was a child, we holidayed a lot in Northumbria. From there, I already knew that place names ending in "Street" were often associated with a Roman road. When I looked on the Ordnance Survey® map for my part of Norfolk, I found many of these. Most of them had no association on the map with any road. The marching camp did not even appear on the Ordnance Survey® map. From that time in my early twenties, I began developing an interest in Norfolk's ancient past. I quickly learnt that settlements often grew up on intersections between roads, and at river crossings. I soon developed an obsession with finding Norfolk's missing Roman roads and trackways. As a child, I remember discovering a collection of flint filled depressions on a local heath. Years later, I learnt of local lore that suggested they may be Stone Age flint pits. Perhaps there were even mines like those near Thetford! This same lore also suggested a trackway to a tumulus in a nearby wood. Knowing these places well, I became hooked! After many years I decided to put my findings on a website. This is the result. Though there is still so much more to find! |
