what's new?I apologise that I hadn't been able to finish the new site so far this year. This has been due to ill health and family commitments. I now hope to finish the changes by Christmas. The new site will be more accessible to those with disability. I am also starting two new catalogues, removing the old one. This is because I can now link to two catalogues that professional archaeologists keep online. One new catalogue will link items that I have found, but which do not appear on them. The second catalogue will be a list of exclusions: Items that may confuse amateur researchers, but which are not related to pre-Norman history. Please bear with me while I finish up writing and publishing the new site. I expect that to be the last major change I have to make. Afterwards, I hope to add a new parish record every month. I list problems I know about here: knownissues.shtml. welcome. This site lists and talks about Norfolk archaeology from before the Norman Conquest. This covers the time from the Palaeolithic, or Old Stone Age, to the Battle of Hastings. The period is vast, and includes the earliest humans in Norfolk. It includes Boudicca's revolt against the Romans and the Viking invasion. It ends with the death of King Harold. The site uses publicly available records. The county of Norfolk dates from the Anglo-Saxons who called themselves the "North Folk". In late Iron Age Celtic and early Roman times, it was home to the Iceni tribe. Their lands stretched to modern Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. a quick guide to navigation. Each catalogue entry has an alphanumeric code; 'AN-' followed by a serial number. The number part has no special meaning. Each entry simply has the next number up. They are listed on the full catalogue page, with links to the entries in the parish catalogue. Web: catalogue.shtml The site also has a full key to catalogues, which explains all phrases used. The glossary will also include these phrases. The first occurrence on each page will link to that entry in the glossary. Web: keytocatalogues.shtml The parish catalogue lists unanswered questions. Web: parishes/index.shtml Please contact me if you can answer any of them or know of more sites or finds. Please give references to public sources. Web: contact.shtml I have split the site into a few parts. You may find these from any page or in the quick links column on the left. Click: index.shtml#quick The right hand column of each page has links for that page's subject. The site has general links at the top of every page. These include a link to the site map which gives a full list of the site. Web: sitemap.shtml I hope you enjoy delving into Norfolk's remote and hidden past, as much as I do. site policies.I have written this site using the World Wide Web Consortium's 'Amaya' editor. So pages meet the XHTML 1.0 and CSS 1 standards. I have designed pages to meet the Web Accessibility Initiative's 'double A' level. Please see the site's accessibility policy for more details. Web: accessibility.shtml You should view this site at 800 by 600 or greater. It should 'transform gracefully' to older web browsers. And it should work with text readers. But I can only test it on Windows XP. If you have any problems with this site, please contact me. Web: webmaster.shtml. I collect no private data, unless I say so before.
