tuesday 10th december 2007.

I am now rolling out the improved site. I expect this be done by the new year.

Some of the changes you may not notice. These include correcting errors in accessibility. For example, the "skip to content" links did not work.

Some changes will be obvious. These include the new format and locations of pages in the main parish catalogue. I will now only add items to the general catalogue that are not in the Norfolk Heritage Explorer one.

I list problems I know about here: knownissues.shtml.

monday 10th december 2007.

Great news! After a long search I have found the Golden Fleece. In this case, it's the Norfolk Heritage Explorer by Norfolk County Council. This hidden gem catalogues pretty much all Norfolk's archaeological sites and finds. This means I no longer have the impossible task of compiling my own! So, instead I will only now catalogue sites and finds I know of not on the county's catalogue. I will add links to it instead, from each parish page.

I apologise for the delays in finishing the review. But the search paid off. This means I will be able to concentrate on expanding coverage across Norfolk. This is what I originally intended.

Great things are about to happen in 2008! Watch this space...

wednesday 28th november 2007.

I have nearly completed the main part of this Three Month Review. I will then move to a Six Month Review. Please note the following changes to come:

  • This home page will change from "index.html" to "index.shtml". If you go to the current page, it will automatically redirect you. I am doing this, to keep all page names consistent.
  • I have abandoned my plan to use only words from the Longman's Defining Dictionary. This simply isn't practical.
  • I am making sure pages conform to the WCAG 'AA' accessibility standard. As far as possible all should conform to the higher 'AAA' standard. But I can't guarantee this.
  • I am working through the pages, to make sure the style of writing meets a PG/13 audience level.
  • I will also be adding a glossary for technical terms.

When I have done these changes, I will adding some new entries to the existing parishes. After that, I will start adding more parishes.

thursday 8th november 2007.

I believe the program I used to make the P3P file was not freeware. I used it believing it was. So I have now taken the created file off this site. I am looking for a freeware or open source program to use.

monday 5th November 2007.

The catalogue entries for Bacton parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

I am now starting the second Three Month Review. Please see the entry below dated Sunday 28th October 2007 for details.

sunday 28th October 2007.

Just a quick note to remind you that the second Three Month Review is coming up. I aim to carry that out, once I have completed the Bacton Parish entry. In this Review, I aim to:-

  1. Correct a minor accessibility issue affecting all pages, which, although minor, will take a little time. Doing this will mean that most pages will meet the "AAA" accessibility standard as I originally intended;
  2. Alter the stylesheet to change certain features such as typeface, or font, and background colours to improve accessibility. Although this is a quick and cosmetic change, it should improve readability for any visitor with visual impairment. Initially, I aim to apply this to a test page, for feedback;
  3. Locate and install a site search facility. Initially, I aim to apply this to a test page, for feedback and to meet the privacy policy of providing advanced notice to changes affecting that policy, since any free search facility is likely to apply third party host cookies. Moving this to the home page, or to every page in a sidebar, will entail writing and uploading instructions on how to remove unwanted cookies on the most popular browsers, or else finding links to such information.

Once I have completed this Three Month Review, I will move to Six Month Reviews.

monday 8th October 2007.

I have started adding the finds in Bacton parish.

friday 28th September 2007.

The catalogue entries for Paston parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

wednesday 26th September 2007.

I have amended this site's accessibility policy and privacy policy pages to note that the policies for this site cannot be extended to the blog associated with it, because of restrictions placed by the host of that service.

I have also further amended the detailed entry for AN-5 to include all the newer observations, as well as to bring the entry more in line with this site's accessibility policy.

tuesday 25th September 2007.

Further updates to conjectural Roman Road AN-5.

monday 24th September 2007.

I have started adding the finds in Paston parish.

I have added two maps to the list of tertiary sources used throughout:

  • Philip's Street Atlas of Norfolk (2003). The primary source of information for this publication is from the Ordnance Survey®, which is why I have given it tertiary rather than secondary status. However, since it details road names even in rural areas that do not appear even on the Explorer™ series of maps, I believe it is a useful resource.
  • Bryant's Map of Norfolk in 1826, reprinted by the Larks Press with an introduction and analysis by J.C. Barringer (1998). Although this appears to be a faithful reproduction of the original publication, there are a number of noted errors in the original. For this reason, I have erred on the side of caution by giving this a tertiary status.

I have amended the entry for conjectural Roman Road AN-5, to include additional placename evidence, following on from A Pilot Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names.

saturday 1st September 2007.

The catalogue entries for Knapton parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

thursday 30th August 2007.

I have now included the references used in compiling A Pilot Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names, which I neglected to do yesterday before uploading.

wednesday 29th August 2007.

I have now completed the reworking of the original 2003-4 study of place names and Roman roads, and have uploaded the results in A Pilot Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names I have also now included links to the source data.

monday 27th August 2007.

I have amended the cascading stylesheet for the site, to correct a problem with the preferred font for titles, American Unciale, in the Safari browser. Computers with the font installed did not display the titles at all. I have changed the preferred font to Arial, and have also changed the titles to Regular, rather than Italic, lettering for accessibility and clarity.

The catalogue entries for Swafield parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

sunday 19th August 2007.

After reviewing the original study in A Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names, I have concluded that there are two errors. I have updated the original report to note this. I will rewrite the report within the next fortnight or so to correct this, and upload it. A full summary of the problems with the current version are stated clearly at the start of the introduction.

thursday 16th August 2007.

I have started adding the finds in Swafield parish.

wednesday 15th August 2007.

The catalogue entries for North Walsham parish are now complete, on the basis of the information I have. If a site or find is not currently included in the catalogue for this parish, then it is because it is unknown to me.

monday 13th August 2007.

I have added named water sources to the existing parish entries. I have also now begun two rolling programmes. The first places a light border around detailed catalogue entries, mainly in the Parish Catalogue and Type Catalogue, which should help visually in distinguishing individual entries. I have also now begun adding summaries of individual finds from the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service website. Each entry's corresponding catalogue number is recorded, and you'll find a link to the website in the Secondary Sources' section for each parish, and from the secondary sources page. Or here: http://www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/

sunday 5th August 2007.

Ready for adding a large number of finds in the existing parishes when I return the week after next, I have divided the Parish Catalogue's individual parish entries into separate sections for sites and finds, as well as adding a few more details to each. I have similarly divided the "site type catalogue", and renamed it simply the "Type Catalogue". This will make it easier to distinguish larger-scale sites from smaller-scale finds once the finds get populated.

It will make sense, once I get going!

Once I have added the known finds to each existing parish, I will then be able to go about the task of adding more parishes as I go. Watch this space!

saturday 4th August 2007.

I have also now added the visual "star ratings" summary to other catalogues than the Parish one. This provides a quick summary of the status of an entry when browsing each catalogue.

This week has cleared the way to my adding new content, and assessing its status. The changes were necessary in order to address a number of problems, suggestions and criticisms. Thank you for your feedback on this site, and for your patience.

friday 3rd August 2007.

I have updated the list of secondary sources, including a list of tertiary sources used throughout. I have also downgraded the Collins Dictionary of First Names to a tertiary source since it neither lists the author or editor, nor includes any citations or references.

I have now completed the process of adding the ratings' graphics to the beginning of the main catalogue entries - mostly in the Parishes Catalogue.

thursday 2nd August 2007.

I have moved the maps to a dedicated folder - maps/ - and placed a start page. This effectively creates a maps' catalogue, which I have added to the Quick Links on the left of every page. Please note that I have also downgraded Roman road AN-5, "Crossdale Street", to 'conjectural'.

wednesday 1st August 2007.

I have uploaded the findings of my 2004 study, A Statistical Study of Potential Roman Sites by Place Names. This minor study of Norfolk has a number of shortcomings, which I discuss in the study. It does, however, provide one of the first studies, in Norfolk at least, assessing claims of place name types statistically against known Roman roads.

monday 30th July 2007.

I have completed the First Three Month Review, and have amended the rules for rating sources and for determining the status of catalogue entries. Because of the detailed nature of this change, I have elected on this occasion to use the new blog to explain, and to allow discussion.

friday 20th July 2007.

Map long descriptions amended to remove discussion and concentrate strictly on accessibility. Criticism class added to status in key to catalogues. Criticism entry added to AN-5 for clarity.

Minor correction to position of hamlet Crossdale Street on map for AN-5, and amendment of long description to clarify that I posit this course.

thursday 19th July 2007.

Map added for catalogue entry AN-5: click here. Also accessible from the Roman Roads Type Catalogue entry.
